If an individual who wanted to be an architect sought your guidance, to what resources might you refer them?
As a design professional, you may direct them to your alma mater, the national AIA, its local chapters or one of the collateral organizations, and now, aspiring architects can access the new comprehensive career resources: Becoming an Architect and ARCHCareers.org
Published in 2006 by J. Wiley & Sons, Becoming an Architect: A Guide to Careers in Design is an important guide to learning the skills and education necessary to be an architect. The publication guides the reader through the major hurdles of graduating with an accredited professional degree in architecture, gaining experience through an internship, and passing the Architect Registration Examination (ARE). Dozens of in-depth interviews and career profiles with students, interns, and practicing architects give insightful, authoritative perspectives on numerous specialties and paths that one can pursue with an education in architecture.
As stated in the foreword, Kate Schwennsen, FAIA, a former AIA national president, writes, “This book recognizes the breadth and depth of architect’s responsibilities and possibilities… (It) is a fundamental beginning to a life of accomplishment as an architect.”
Relaunched in 2006 due in part to a Graham Foundation grant, ARCHCareers.org is a collaborative effort of the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS), the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and this author. In many ways parallel to Becoming an Architect, ARCHCareers provides an overview to the process of becoming an architect through sections on Architecture Education, Internship and Experience and Examination and Licensure. It also connects users to additional resources within the profession and provides them the ability to submit questions to “Dr. Architecture.” More than anything, it serves as a one-stop location to start for information on the pursuit of being an architect.
For those desirous to be an architect, the process is not always easy to understand, but these two new resources help to make it much clearer. Be sure to share these resources with those that may come to you dreaming to be an architect.
